Foreign Languages

At Highlands Primary, language is recognised as an essential part of a broad, balanced curriculum. Learning Spanish provides children with the opportunity to communicate more effectively with others, as well as to learn about the lives of people from another culture.

Children are taught how to pronounce sounds and to recognise how these are represented in writing. In addition to developing a range of commonly used and useful vocabulary, the children are taught to and expected to read, write and apply their newly acquired knowledge of the Spanish language to describe things in a grammatically accurate way, including asking and appropriately responding to devised questions.

The focus on learning Spanish begins with drip-feeding general greetings throughout foundation stage and across key stage one, with more formal teaching beginning in year three and continuing across key stage two. Regular opportunities are built in for children to revise and revisit previously taught vocabulary and grammatically constructs, including correct pronunciation and understanding basic grammatical forms, such as the masculine, feminine and neuter forms.

Spanish has been chosen as this links with our Geography curriculum and is the place our children are most likely to visit if they holiday abroad.
